A 5-month-old baby is usually able to sit up (with some support) and pass toys from one hand to another. Some babies at this stage of development also start become aware and wary of strangers.

How a 5-month-old sleeps

Uh oh... expect baby to start waking up during the night to feed. Sleep becomes 5-6 hours at a time, but still baby's overall sleep patterns are about 12-15 hours total per day. Your baby may wake himself up by sitting up. Don't feel that you have to comfort him straight away; let him get used to going back to sleep himself.

Fear of strangers?

Some babies at this stage of development develop a mistrust and fear of those who are not familiar. This is because your baby is beginning to recognise those who are the most important people in his or her everyday life. Don't worry about the fear of strangers, it will go away over time, but it helps to slowly introduce your baby to new people.

Nutrition for your 5-month-old

Whether you breastfeed or use formula, your baby needs protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals in order to develop strong bones, healthy muscles, and a strong body.
Here are the essential nutrients for your baby's growth:

  • Vitamin C helps form collagen, a protein that gives structure to bones, cartilage, muscle, blood vessels, and other connective tissue. It helps maintain capillaries, bones, and teeth. In addition, vitamin C is essential for healing wounds and helping the body resist infection, and it aids in iron absorption.
  • Calcium plays an important role in bone and tooth development, blood clotting, and maintenance of healthy nerves and muscles.
  • Iron is necessary for proper growth and formation of healthy blood cells. Iron is part of hemoglobin, a protein which is involved in carrying and storing oxygen.
  • Proteins help develop, maintain, and repair new tissues throughout the body, including muscles.

Exploring your world together

Show baby the world around him by encouraging him to raise his head and push up on his armsto watch what is happening in the world around him. Help him find his feet by holding your baby upright under the arms, and letting his feet find the table, bed or your lap. Encourage sitting by propping your baby in the corner of a chair or couch.

Build curiosity, encourage your baby to follow faces or bright objects with his eyes. Help your baby pick up objects, but be careful to avoid small objects that could be swallowed

Typical 5-month-old baby milestones

These milestones are generally seen around the 5-month milestone. Don't worry if you don't see them yet. All babies develop at different rates.

By the end of 5 months, most babies will sit with support, transfer objects from one hand to another, make two-syllable sounds, such as ‘ah-goo’ and give ‘raspberries’ by make a razzing sound with his lips.
