What can I expect from my baby in month 3?

A unique personality is starting to show through. Intelligence is growing, too, as baby begins to learn more about how the world works. Now is a good time for new people, objects and experiences.

How a 3-month-old sleeps

Five to six hour stretches of sleep are common through the night.
Make baby comfortable with a regular bedtime routine, signaling sleep time with gentle rocking and touching. When he cries, just respond quietly and unobtrusively. Don't reward crying with too much attention.

Exploring your world together

Help your baby explore his or her new world in these simple ways:

  • Prop her up so she can see more of her surroundings.
  • Put a (safe, plastic) mirror in the cot.
  • Allow some times for quietness, when TV or music are turned off. Your baby needs some quiet time to babble, play, and explore his world.
  • Find many different textures (materials, toys, rubber, stuffed animals) for baby to explore, but make sure the pieces are not too small.
  • Sing quietly to him before bed.
  • Those little 3-month-old hands are getting ready for a lifetime of usefulness. In five or six months, he'll be able to pick up toys. Meantime, help development by putting a rattle in his hand and gently tugging on the big end.

How nutrition can help support your baby's immune system

Whether you choose to breastfeed or formula feed, your baby's immune system needs important nutrients. Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and other nutritional compounds are important for a healthy immune system.

Here is how different nutrients can help your baby's immune system:

  • Carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids are macronutrients that supply energy, provide cell membrane structure, and promote growth and development.
  • Vitamins and minerals are essential factors in many key metabolic processes that occur in our bodies. For example, zinc plays an essential role in the normal growth and function of many cells and tissues, including immune cells.
  • Nucleotides are important substances that serve as the basic structural unit of DNA and help build and repair cells. They are especially important during times of rapid growth and development, such as infancy. Dietary nucleotides can help our body build antibodies, which are an important part of our immune defenses.

Typical 3-month-old baby milestones

These milestones are generally seen around the 3-month milestone. Don't worry if you don't see them yet; all babies develop at different rates.

By the end of 3 months, most babies will hold his head up steadily, make ‘coo’ and ‘goo’ noises as well as other sounds, reach for familiar objects and focus on closely held objects and follow them from side to side.
