Your baby is constantly taking in new information about the world around him. He's also learning how to communicate with you.

How a 2-month-old sleeps

Sleeps will get shorter during the day, and longer at night. Start putting baby into the cot before she's fully asleep, while she's still groggy. This will help her get used to falling asleep on her own. Make daytime bright and lively, and evening darker and calmer.

Your baby's learning style

Observing, attaching and bonding. That's how your 2-month-old baby is gaining vast amounts of knowledge each day. She's paying particular attention to how people interact with each other, learning about relationships and learning that she is a separate person from others.

Communication style

Although there are no words, your baby is communicating to you with body language all the time.
For example, baby will let you know when he has a lot of energy, or when it's time for talking, feeding, singing or playing. And, of course, sleeping.

What your baby's brain needs

Your baby's brain development depends on good nutrition. It's essential to get appropriate amounts of both macronutrients (carbohydrates, lipids, and protein) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals). They give structure to baby's cells, regulate the metabolism and supply energy.

  • Carbohydrates supply food energy for growth, body functions, and activity in addition to allowing protein and fats to be used efficiently and normally.
  • Lipids supply more than twice the energy of carbohydrates or protein to power growth and functionality. Fatty acids are one of the most abundant lipids in our body - linoleic and alpha-linolenic fatty acids are considered essential because our body cannot make them. These two acids serve as building blocks for arachidonic acid (ARA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), respectively. DHA and ARA are important for brain and eye development.
  • Proteins help develop, maintain, and repair new tissues throughout the body, including in the brain.

Typical 2-month-old baby milestones

These milestones are generally seen around the 2-month milestone. Don't worry if you don't see them yet; all babies develop at different rates.

By the end of 2 months, most babies will smile when touched or talked to, react to loud sounds, no longer keep her hands in tight fists, start to recognise you and your partner as parents, be able to lift her chest off the floor using forearms for support.
