How newborn babies sleep

Your baby will sleep a lot. Typically, newborns sleep 2-3 hours at a time, 16 to 18 hours a day. Establish a routine early by feeding your baby at the same time every day.

Feeding your newborn baby

Feed frequently and in small amounts. A newborn is not very hungry the first two or three days. When your baby is hungry, she will give you signals such as lip smacking, tongue movement, and eye fluttering. When she cries, it means feeding time was some time ago. Talk softly when feeding. Your baby will hear your voice and associate it with nourishment.

Your baby will stare at objects. She'll see things clearest within 30 centimetres of her face. Bold shapes and high-contrast objects will capture her attention. Faces are fascinating to baby, and he might even start copying your expressions.

Sounds that change, like music - or your voice - are great for baby. But loud sounds can be scary.
While your baby's hearing is well-developed, she doesn't yet know to look for the source of the sound. When there's a scary sound, baby might cry, stiffen his body, or put his arms out, then pull them back.

The 5 senses

What baby sees - your baby will stare at objects. She'll see things clearest within 30 cm of her face.

What baby hears - sounds that change, like music or your voice, are great for baby. But loud sounds can be scary. When there's a scary sound, baby might cry, stiffen his body, or put his arms out, then pull them back.

How baby moves - your baby is just discovering the new world around him. His hands will grasp, his mouth will yawn (and search for food), his head will turn. Basically every muscle and limb is being tested.
